GYM Remind - Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about using GYM Remind - from logging your first workout to managing years of training history.

Overview

GYM Remind is a fully featured fitness tracking platform that runs entirely in your web browser. There is no server, no account, and no app to install. All your data is stored locally using your browser's built-in storage.

The app is organized into 13 modules accessible from the sidebar on the left. Each module has a specific job - from logging workouts to tracking daily habits. You navigate between them by clicking the icons in the sidebar.

Your data never leaves your device. GYM Remind has no backend server. Nothing is transmitted over the internet (except loading the page itself on first visit).

Quick Start

When you first open the app, a setup wizard walks you through the basics. Here's what happens and what to expect:

1
Onboarding wizard Enter your name, current weight, height, and set your first goals. You can skip any step and fill these in later from the Goals and Settings sections.
2
Dashboard loads After setup, you land on the Dashboard showing your stat cards, today's habits, and recent workouts. Most cards show "--" until you start logging data.
3
Log your first workout Click the Workout Log in the sidebar, then "Log Workout." Add exercises, sets, reps, and weights. Click Save Workout when done.
4
Check your daily habits Go to Daily Tracker and check off completed habits. These reset at midnight each day and build streak counts.
5
Export a backup Before relying on the app, go to Settings and click "Export JSON Backup" to save a copy of all your data.

Dashboard

The Dashboard is your home base. It gives you a live snapshot of today's performance without needing to navigate to individual sections.

Stat Cards

Eight cards show: Current Weight, Goal Weight, Calories Today, Protein Today, Water Today, Workout Streak, Body Fat %, and Weekly Workouts. All values pull from your real logged data and update as you add entries.

Habits Panel

Shows today's 5 habits with a progress bar and percentage. You can check habits directly from the Dashboard - no need to navigate to Daily Tracker.

Streak Panel

Displays the current and longest streak for each of your 5 habits.

Recent Workouts

Shows your last 4 workout sessions with date, duration, and exercise count.

Daily Tracker

The Daily Tracker is a habit checklist that resets automatically at midnight each day. It tracks streaks to help you build consistency.

Checking Habits

Click any habit row to toggle it on or off. When all 5 habits are completed, a celebration animation plays and a toast notification fires. The progress bar at the top shows your daily completion percentage.

Streaks

Each habit tracks a current streak (consecutive days completed) and a longest streak. Missing one day resets the current streak but not the record.

Customizing Habit Names

Go to Settings and scroll to "Daily Habit Names" to rename any of the 5 habits. The defaults are: Creatine Taken, Protein Goal Met, Workout Completed, Water Goal Met, and Sleep 7-9 Hours.

History

The last 14 days of habit history are shown below the checklist, with which habits were completed each day and a percentage badge.

Reset today: Click "Reset Today" to clear all of today's habit checks. This does not affect history from previous days.

Nutrition Tracking

Log your daily food intake with full macronutrient and micronutrient breakdown. Each entry tracks calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sugar, and water.

Fill in the formEnter calories and any macros you want to track. Only calories are required, all other fields are optional.
2
Add notes (optional)Use the notes field to record the meal name or food source.

Daily Summary

Progress bars show how close you are to your daily targets (set in Goals). The macro donut chart shows the ratio of protein, carbs, and fat for today's entries.

Progress Photos

Upload and organize progress photos entirely in the browser. Photos are stored as base64 data in localStorage - no files are uploaded to any server.

Adding Photos

Drag and drop an image onto the upload zone, or click "Choose File" to select one. Add an optional label and date, then click "Save Photo."

Viewing Photos

Photos appear in a responsive gallery grid. Click any photo to open it in the lightbox viewer for a full-size view. Use the arrow buttons or keyboard arrow keys to navigate between photos in the lightbox. Press Escape to close.

Storage warning: Photos are the largest data type. Each photo can use 0.5-3 MB of your 5-10 MB storage limit. Check your storage usage in Settings and export a backup regularly if you store many photos.

Notes

A training journal for logging thoughts, observations, form cues, or anything else related to your training. Each note has a title, date, and content.

Creating a Note

Fill in the title (optional) and content fields, set the date, and click "Save Note." The note appears in the list below, sorted newest first.

Editing Notes

Click the edit (pencil) icon on any note to load it back into the form. Make your changes and click "Update Note" to save.

Search

The search bar at the top of the notes list filters in real time across both title and content. Type any word to find matching notes instantly.

Statistics

An aggregate view of your entire training history. Unlike the Dashboard (which shows today), Statistics shows lifetime and long-term metrics.

Stat Cards

10 cards covering: Average Calories/Day, Average Protein/Day, Average Water/Day, Total Weight Change, Total Workouts, Total Workout Time, Habit Completion Rate, Longest Single Workout, Current Streak, and Longest Ever Streak.

Progress Summary

Shows weight change from first to latest entry, average macros, and workout frequency trends.

Achievements

Badge system that unlocks as you hit milestones: logging first workout, 10 and 50 total workouts, maintaining a 7-day streak, logging 30+ nutrition days, and more.

Settings

Theme

Toggle between dark (default) and light theme. The header also has a sun/moon button that switches theme from any section.

Accent Color

Choose from 6 accent colors: Blue (default), Purple, Green, Orange, Red, and Pink. The selected color is applied to buttons, highlights, active states, and chart elements.

Units

Switch between metric (kg, cm) and imperial (lbs, inches). All existing and future entries display in the selected unit. Values are stored in metric internally.

Daily Habit Names

Rename the 5 daily habits to match your actual routine. Type new names in the 5 fields and click "Save Habit Names." Changes apply immediately across the Daily Tracker, Dashboard, and streak displays.

Storage Usage

Shows how much localStorage you are using and approximately what percentage of the typical 5 MB limit. This updates each time you open Settings.

Backup & Restore

Since GYM Remind has no cloud backend, your own backups are your safety net. Make them regularly.

Export JSON Backup

Goes to Settings - click "Export JSON Backup." A file named gymremind-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.json downloads automatically. This contains all your data.

Import Backup

Click "Import Backup" in Settings and select a previously exported JSON file. All data in the file is written to localStorage. This merges with existing data by key - existing data for any category in the file will be overwritten.

Export CSV

Downloads a simplified CSV of your workouts and nutrition entries - useful for viewing in Excel or Google Sheets. This is not a complete backup; use JSON for full backups.

Export before clearing your browser. If you clear site data, cookies, or browser history, GYM Remind data may be erased. Always keep a recent backup.

Syncing to Another Device

1
Export on Device ASettings - Export JSON Backup. Save the file.
2
Transfer the fileEmail it to yourself, use cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud, etc.), or USB transfer.
3
Import on Device BOpen GYM Remind, go to Settings, click Import Backup, select the file.

Storage Limits

Browser localStorage is typically limited to 5 MB per origin (some browsers allow up to 10 MB). Here's what uses the most space:

Data TypeTypical SizeNotes
Workouts (1 year)~50-200 KBDepends on exercises per session
Nutrition (1 year)~30-80 KBMultiple entries per day
Body Progress (1 year)~20-50 KBWeekly entries
Habits (1 year)~20-40 KBDaily history
Photos (each)~500 KB - 3 MBLargest storage consumer
Notes (100 notes)~20-100 KBDepends on length
Photos are the biggest risk. If you store many progress photos, check the storage indicator in Settings regularly. Delete old photos and export backups before you get close to the limit.

Privacy

GYM Remind is built with privacy as a core constraint, not an afterthought.

  • All data is stored exclusively in your browser's localStorage using the gr_* key prefix
  • No data is ever sent to a server - there is no server
  • No analytics scripts, no ad networks, no tracking pixels
  • No cookies are set (localStorage is not a cookie)
  • The app can function fully offline after the first page load
  • CDN resources (fonts, Lucide icons, Chart.js) are loaded from trusted public CDNs on first load only
You can verify GYM Remind's privacy claims by opening your browser's DevTools (F12), going to the Network tab, and refreshing. After the initial page load, you will see zero outgoing network requests when using the app.
